Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes rules the worldwide box office with $129 million opening

May 12, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Apes and humans can live together if this weekend is anything to go by, with audiences turning out in huge numbers for 20th Century and Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Wes Ball’s continuation of the $1.7 billion grossing Apes franchise swung to a domestic debut of $56.5 million and $72.5 million international, for a chest-beating global start of $129 million.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes North American debut is the second highest of the series, coming in behind 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which opened to a franchise-record $72.6 million.

In second place, Universal’s The Fall Guy had better hope there’s a crash mat laid out for its sophomore performance, with the Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt action-comedy following up its lacklustre debut with an estimated $13.7 million, plummeting 51% for a 10-day total of $49.7 million.

The David Leitch-directed film isn’t faring much better overseas, where it only earned $9.4 million, for a lowly $54 million international tally, and $103.7 million globally.

Elsewhere in the charts there was better news for Zendaya’s Challengers, which held its serve well during its third frame, earning $4.7 million for a running total of $38.4 million domestic, and a global cume of $68.7 million.
