Adam Sandler officially returning for Happy Gilmore 2 at Netflix

May 16, 2024 by Ricky Church

Adam Sandler is returning to one of his most iconic roles as Netflix announced they will produce Happy Gilmore 2 for the streamer.

Released in 1996, Happy Gilmore followed Sandler as the title character, a failed hockey player who is repeatedly kicked off teams due to his raging temper. When the bank will foreclose on his grandmother’s house, he sets out to raise enough money for them to keep it and discovers he has an unnatural if unorthodox talent for golf. After getting trained by Chubbs Peterson, a former pro-golfer played by the late Carl Weathers, Happy enters into the PGA Tour for the prize money, but is at odds with golf champ ‘Shooter’ McGavin who is not only arrogant in his skill, but views Happy’s lack of decorum as an insult to their profession and does whatever he can to ruin Happy’s chances at saving his grandmother’s home.

Even nearly 30 years later, Happy Gilmore is still one of Sandler’s most popular and iconic films. Sandler’s production company Happy Madison is named after it and one of his other most popular films, Billy Madison. Among other aspects to the film’s longevity, it is popular for a fistfight between Sandler and the late beloved Price is Right host Bob Barker, something the two even recreated several years later.

Netflix announced the news at Upfronts, but there is no word on a director, plot or if any other members of the cast will return. Starring alongside Sandler in the original were Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin and Julie Bowen as Happy’s girlfriend. It is likely McDonald will reprise his role as he was the first one to speak of its potential in March.

Happy Gilmore 2 will fall under Sandler’s big picture deal with Netflix, which has been home to several of his recent films such as Murder Mystery and its sequel, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah and The Do-Over.
