Max cancels Tokyo Vice after two seasons

June 11, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Having ended its critically-acclaimed second season earlier this year, Max has announced that Tokyo Vice has been cancelled.

According to Variety the news was broken during a panel with Max original programming chief Sarah Aubrey, who revealed that the decision to end Tokyo Vice after two seasons was something that was planned as a storytelling arc to allow the writers to build toward a clear end point.

The show’s creator and executive producer J.T. Rogers and executive producer Alan Poul were on hand to reveal that although the show has run its course on Max, they still hope to return to the world of Tokyo Vice, saying “we know there is more story to tell…of course we’ll see what the future holds”.

The first American TV show to film entirely in Japan, Tokyo Vice was loosely based on journalist Jake Adelstein’s 2009 memoir Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan, and starred Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, Ayumi Ito, Yosuke Kubozuka and Miki Maya.
