Zhang Yimou to direct feature film version of Three-Body Problem

June 18, 2024 by EJ Moreno

The hit Netflix series Three-Body Problem has boosted enough interest in the sci-fi IP that the film adaptation has finally landed a director. Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou will direct the upcoming feature version of the sci-fi novel, which is entering the early days of production.

During the opening forum of the Shanghai International Film Festival, CEO of China’s Enlight Media Wang Changtian was the one to break into the story, saying Three-Body Problem will soon enter pre-production.

The Three-Body Problem is the first novel in a series by Chinese novelist Liu Cixin, published in 2008. Many adaptations have been made, but the most recent one comes from Netflix, where Alexander Woo, David Benioff, and D.B. Weiss crafted a series adaptation.

The compelling sci-fi story tells the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. It follows a young woman whose fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unflinching detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.

If you’re unfamiliar with him, Zhang is best known for his films The Road Home (1999), House of Flying Daggers (2004), and The Great Wall, a Western crossover released in 2016.

Stay tuned for more news regarding this production.
