Denis Villeneuve “event picture” set for 2026 sparks Dune Messiah speculation

June 30, 2024 by EJ Moreno

When Warner Bros. sets a release date for a Denis Villeneuve-directed ‘event film,’ it’s safe to say the Dune fans got hyped on spice.

While only being labeled as “an event picture released in IMAX,” that was enough to instantly cause chatter about getting Dune Messiah from Villeneuve.

It’s not official, but even Deadline reports that a third trip to the Dune universe is the most likely candidate. The trade adds that “hurdles still have to be cleared as they’re still working on the script and locking cast, but it is the project Villeneuve has been working on.”

There’s no official confirmation on the plot of the potential third Dune film, but it’s reported that they’ll adapt Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah. This wouldn’t be the first adaptation of this story, though; the Sci-Fi Channel collectively adapted Dune Messiah and its sequel, Children of Dune, in 2003.

It should be noted that Villeneuve has said that Messiah would be his final Dune film. The script is reportedly done, and Hans Zimmer is already working on a score. As for when they’ll begin, DanielRPK indicates that production has locked in an August 2025 start.
