Anthony Mackie suggests The Hulk may be in Captain America: Civil War after all

February 19, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Originally published February 19, 2016. Updated April 15, 2018.

It’s a question that’s been asked for the best part of a year now: will The Hulk feature in May’s Captain America: Civil War? Kevin Feige teased as much, and Mark Ruffalo was spotted on set last August, before the actor ruled out an appearance the following month. Well, Anthony Mackie may have just let slip that The Hulk will be featuring after all, name dropping Mark Ruffalo during an interview on BBC Radio 1.

“[Civil War] is Marvel’s best movie so far,” said Mackie. “It’s really, really good. It’s because it’s more of an acting movie than an action movie. I feel like the story is very concise and interesting, and you get to see Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson and Mark Ruffalo and everybody just do really, really good acting. And then there’s action in it. I think it might be the first superhero movie that might be up for Best Picture.”

Now, either this is just a slip of the tongue on Mackie’s part, or he’s confirmed that The Hulk will indeed cameo in the Phase Three-launching threequel. It seems we’re going to have to wait until May to know for certain…

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
