Guys and Dolls remake sets Rob Marshall as director

September 9, 2024 by EJ Moreno

A return to classic Hollywood could be just what the doctor ordered.

Known for bringing Broadway to the screen with Chicago, Rob Marshall is set to direct a new take on Guys and Dolls. In a report from The InSneider, this long-gestating remake of the Tony award-winning iconic musical will come from Sony’s TriStar Pictures.

Guys and Dolls began as an American musical that premiered on Broadway in 1950. The show was created by Frank Loesser (music and lyrics) with Jo Swerling & Abe Burrows (book). It’s based on the short stories of Damon Runyon, who saw a film adaptation in 1955. Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, and Vivian Blaine starred in the film, which was directed by legendary filmmaker Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

The musical had spawned showtune staples like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” It was a touchstone for the Broadway heydays, running for three years and capturing five Tony Awards, including the Best Musical award.

At the time of writing, no actors are attached to this rendition of the adaptation. At one point in the film’s hectic road to production, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were set to star in a version from 20th Century Fox. TriStar picked up the rights to the property in 2019.
