Joker director Todd Phillips isn’t planning a Harley Quinn spinoff or more DC movies

October 6, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Joker: Folie à Deux is shaping up to be one of the most polarizing films of the year, and it seems like director and co-writer Todd Phillips knows his time with superhero filmmaking is up.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker revealed that he has no more interest in this universe, denying a follow-up spin-off centered on Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn: “It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.”

We also had a bit of a discussion about how he got Gaga involved, with Phillips adding: “I think we sent her half the script, and she texted me pretty quickly that she was really into it, that she loved it and everything you want to hear. And then I went out to her house, and we met about what it was going to be, the rest of it because we hadn’t written it yet. [Co-writer] Scott Silver and I are notoriously slow writers.”

Joker: Folie à Deux has a current critic and audience score of 32% and debuted with a D on CinemaScore, while its opening weekend box office is coming in below expectations.

“Joker: Folie Ą Deux” finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham, awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.

The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker opposite Oscar-winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out, Capote), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.
