Paul W.S. Anderson to write and direct The House of the Dead videogame adaptation

October 31, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Paul W.S. Anderson loves a videogame adaptation, because following six Resident Evil films, a Mortal Kombat, and one Monster Hunter movie, he is set to write and direct a big-screen version of Sega’s classic shoot-em-up The House of the Dead.

Per Deadline’s report Anderson will work alongside his producing partner Jeremy Bolt, with whom he collaborated on all of his videogame movies, to create a horror film based on 2002’s The House of the Dead III. Anderson said, “If you know the mythology, that is all about family conflict, amidst the action and scares. It’s about a woman, Lisa Rogan, who’s attempting to rescue her father. And it’s also about Daniel Curien, who’s the son of the man who caused this mutant outbreak in the first place and who has to deal with the sins of the father.”

This won’t be the first time that the zombies of The House of the Dead have been brought to the big-screen. Uwe Boll directed a prequel movie in 2003, but that shuffled off with just $13 million at the box-office. A direct-to-DVD sequel followed two years later, which was also dead-on-arrival.

The House of the Dead was first released in 1997 as a light-gun first-person shooter arcade game by Sega. A further five games were released in the main series, as well as several spin-offs on multiple consoles. The last entry in the series was a remake of the original game, which came out in April 2022.
