Tim Burton rules out an Edward Scissorhands sequel, but is sure he’ll work with Johnny Depp again

December 5, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Tim Burton certainly isn’t averse to sequels, remakes, or follow-ups, but he holds some particular work precious. One of those projects that won’t get a follow-up is Edward Scissorhands.

As reported by IndieWire, Burton participated in a Q&A at the Marrakech International Film Festival and was asked about sequels and whether he’d tackle one for his iconic 90s Johnny Depp-led film.

Burton explains why he stands firm against sequels to specific works, telling the outlet: “There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to. I didn’t want to make a sequel to that because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for The Nightmare Before Christmas because it also felt like a one-off thing. Certain things are best left on their own, and that, for me, is one of them.”

However, this doesn’t close the door to working with Depp, as the filmmaker hopes to do it again, adding: “Well, I’m sure there will be [another collaboration]. I never feel like, oh, I’m going to use this and that actor. It usually has to be based on the project I’m working on. That’s what film is all about. It’s collaboration and bouncing ideas off the people around you.”

The duo has collaborated on eight films: Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, as well as Dark Shadows.

Burton is currently promoting the streaming release and award campaign for his latest film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Read our written review here and watch our video review below…
