Nosferatu’s Robert Eggers to officially navigate a Labyrinth sequel

January 24, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Robert Eggers is the new directing darling in Hollywood. The filmmaker has just been announced as releasing his next film Werwulf at Christmas 2026 and has now been confirmed for a long-awaited legacy sequel.

The Nosferatu filmmaker will write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures. Deadline confirmed the story, which we initially reported on The InSneider rumors in December.

1986’s Labyrinth is a dark fantasy film directed by Jim Henson. The story follows a frustrated teenage girl named Sarah (played by Jennifer Connelly) who wishes her baby brother Toby would be taken away by Jareth, the Goblin King (played by David Bowie). She then embarks on a quest to rescue her brother, navigating the labyrinth and meeting a delirious collection of creatures.

The original was considered a box office flop at first, grossing only around $34 million worldwide against a reported budget of $25 million. However, it quickly gained a loyal fanbase, propelling the film to cult classic status.

Little is known about Eggers’ take, but the outlet notes, “The film is a sequel to, rather than a remake of, Jim Henson’s 1986 classic.” Eggers is writing the script with Sjón, his co-writer on The Northman.

Eggers is fresh off Nosferatu, his most commercial hit yet, having passed $156 million worldwide since Christmas Day. The film also made waves during this year’s award season, landing Oscar nominations in the Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling categories.

Werwulf is set for release on Christmas 2026.
