Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms series in development from Netflix and Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy

February 16, 2025 by Gary Collinson

Netflix is set to roll the dice on a new big-budget fantasy series, with Deadline revealing that the streamer has tapped Stranger Things executive producer and Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy to develop a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series.

Entitled Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms, the potential series will take place within the iconic Forgotten Realms campaign setting, which also served as the source material for the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, although it will be unrelated to the movie.

Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast have been looking to produce a Dungeons & Dragons series for several years now, with Paramount+ previously giving the green light to an eight-episode series from Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello (WeCrashed), which would have been produced by Paramount Pictures and the Hasbro-owned eOne.

That incarnation was ultimately abandoned after a focus shift at Paramount+ and Hasbro sale of eOne to Lionsgate in 2023, although Crevello remained on board to redevelop the concept with Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps production banner subsequently becoming attached and taking the package to Netflix. It certainly seems a fitting combination given the game’s prominence in Stranger Things, which has already spawned a comic book crossover, with a second set to launch this week [get a sneak peek here].
