Production has begun on the third season of HBO’s hit Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon with the studio also announcing new additions to the cast for the highly anticipated season.
HBO announced the news over social media in a video with lead star Emma D’Arcy. The brief video showed D’Arcy in costume and on set as they revealed it was day one of season three’s production.

As for the new cast members, joining the series are Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy), Dan Fogler (The Offer) and James Norton (Happy Valley). Flanagan will portray Ser Roderick Dustin, a Northman who commands two thousand Northerners known as the Winter Wolves in support of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s claim to the throne.
Fogler will play Ser Torrhen Manderly, another Northen lord from White Harbor who is among the Winter Wolves while Norton will be Ormund Hightower, Ser Otto’s nephew and commander of the Green forces in the south for Aegon II’s claim.
With the Targaryen civil war now in full swing at the conclusion of the second season, we’ll be sure to see many more characters, battles and complications for both families as the war rages on. We’ll have to wait for more information on who else is joining the series now that season three has begun filming.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen. Following King Aegon II’s coronation and the death of Queen Rhaenyra’s son, House Targaryen is divided in two. In King’s Landing, Aegon II rules from the Iron Throne, supported by Alicent and the Green Council, under the protection of the largest dragon in Westeros. From exile on Dragonstone, Queen Rhaenyra and her Black Council consider their next move. Civil war looms as both sides seek support from the great houses of Westeros, ultimately amassing armies — and dragons.
Season 2 stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Matthew Needham, Sonoya Mizuno, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban and Jefferson Hall. Additional Season Two cast includes Abubakar Salim, Gayle Rankin, Freddie Fox, Simon Russell Beale, Clinton Liberty, Jamie Kenna, Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Tom Taylor, and Vincent Regan.
