H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West: Reanimator set for “contemporary reimagining”

April 28, 2025 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that a “contemporary reimagining” of H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West: Reanimator is in development from indie outfit Woodlake Entertainment and screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe (The Haunting in Connecticut).

“We are very excited for Woodlake and the amazing team assembled to reinvent this classic horror literature into a contemporary frightening feature film,” said Woodlake owner Roger Lewis, who will executive produce alongside Andrew Trapani (Winchester).

Originally serialised in 1922, Herbert West: Reanimator tells the story of a brilliant medical student who becomes ostracised due to his belief that he can overcome death, and whose experiments with a serum that can re-animate the dead become increasingly reprehensible, with deadly consequences.

The short story was previously adapted for the big screen by director Stuart Gordon with the cult 1985 horror comedy Re-Animator, which starred Jeffrey Combs in the role of Herbert West. Combs would return to the role for 1990’s Bride of Re-Animator, as well as 2003’s Beyond Re-Animator.
