Kayce Dutton Yellowstone spin-off Y: Marshals officially greenlit by CBS

May 9, 2025 by Ricky Church

Back in March news broke of another potential Yellowstone spin-off focusing on Kayce Dutton was in the early stages of development. Now it has been confirmed CBS has officially greenlit Y: Marshals as part of its midseason series.

Y: Marshals, which is currently the working title of the series, will see Luke Grimes’ Kayce “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Rather than airing on MTV and Paramount+ as Yellowstone did, Y: Marshals will have its home at CBS for traditional broadcast TV with Spencer Hudnut (SEAL Team) serving as showrunner.

When we last saw Kayce Dutton in the Yellowstone series finale, he had successfully sold his family’s land to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation in order to preserve the land and save his father’s beloved ranch from industrial developers. He, his wife Monica and their son Tate still live on the land in the home they built as part of their deal with Rainwater.

As of now Grimes is the only Yellowstone cast member to star in the spin-off. It is unknown if Kelsey Asbille and Brecken Merrill will reprise their roles as Monica and Tate Dutton or if we’ll see more of Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty as Rainwater’s right-hand man Mo. As for the rest of the Dutton family, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are getting their own spin-off series for Paramount+.

Y: Marshals will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios with Taylor Sheridan along with David C. Glasser executive producing for 101 Studios.
