After years of varying development, Amazon MGM’s upcoming series adaptation of the hit Bioware and EA video game franchise Mass Effect has secured a showrunner for the epic sci-fi. Per Deadline, Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) will, ahem, shepherd the series.
Mass Effect follows Commander Shepherd as they become the first human Spectre, a highly trained soldier of the Galactic Council, as they uncover secrets of an ancient galactic threat known as the Reapers. With the help of their allies from various alien races, Shepherd must stop the Reapers from destroying all life in the galaxy.
Mass Effect was first released on Xbox 360 and saw players step into Shepherd’s shoes, putting their own spin on Shepherd’s appearance, gender and backstory in a franchise that is defined by how it adapts the story to the player’s choices. Mass Effect 2 and 3 were subsequently released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with a remastered Mass Effect Legendary Edition that included all three games released in 2021 for the Xbox One and PS4.
Jung, who serves as an executive producer in Apple TV+’s upcoming drama Chief of War starring Jason Momoa later this summer, joins Daniel Casey (F9: The Fast Saga) who is writing the series. Executive producing is Karim Zreik for Cedar Tree Productions, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu for Arad Productions and EA’s Michael Gamble.
