HBO’s True Detective may have found its star name for its fifth season, with Deadline reporting that Nicolas Cage is in talks to lead the cast of the next iteration of the Emmy-winning anthology series.
The as-yet-untitled fifth season will see the return of True Detective: Night Country writer and showrunner Issa Lopez, and is set to take place in Jamaica Bay in New York. Cage is said to have been circling the lead role of New York detective Henry Logan for some time, and is now officially in negotiations with HBO.
Should Cage close a deal, he’ll join the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Mahershala Ali and Jodie Foster in leading the series, which was originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, who served as showrunner on the first three seasons before Lopez took over for Night Country. It would also mark a quick return to the small screen for Cage, who will soon be seen in Sony’s live-action Marvel series Spider-Noir, which is coming to MGM+ in 2026.
Filming on season five of True Detective is slated to get underway in the coming months ahead of a planned 2027 premiere. Expect official casting news soon.
