Jake Johnson and Annabelle Wallis join Tom Cruise in The Mummy reboot

March 9, 2016 by Justin Cook

According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Girl star Jake Johnson is the latest actor to join Tom Cruise (Edge of Tomorrow) and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) in the upcoming reboot of The Mummy and Universal’s larger cinematic monster universe. The shared universe, which the studio seems to be building in a fashion similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will also include solo films for such classic movie monsters as the Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Gill-man, the Bride of Frankenstein and the Invisible Man.

In addition to Johnson’s casting, it has also been announced that Annabelle and Peaky Blinders actress Annabelle Wallis is in talks to come on board the film as the female lead. Reports suggest that Wallis will play an archaeologist and Johnson will play a member of the military, a role that was “written specifically for him.”

While perhaps best known for his TV work, Johnson has had much success branching into film over the past few years as well, taking roles of varying sizes in such films as Safety Not Guaranteed, 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, Neighbors and Let’s Be Cops. Interestingly enough, the actor even had a small, but memorable role in the second highest grossing film of 2015, Jurassic World, in which he played Lowery, a Jurassic Park-obsessed control room employee.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, written by Jon Spaihts and produced by Kurtzman, Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel. Universal will release the film on June 9, 2017.
