Cate Blanchett to return as Valka in How To Train Your Dragon 2

January 16, 2026 by Ricky Church

After last year’s live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon became a box office success, Dreamworks decided to move ahead with adapting the second film in their animated trilogy, and the studio has now announced the return of another of the original’s vocal cast to reprise their role in live-action.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cate Blanchett will star in How To Train Your Dragon 2 as Valka, Hiccup’s mother who has been missing and believed to be dead. Blanchett voiced Valka in the second and third films of the animated trilogy and is the second actor to reprise her role in live-action, the first being Gerard Butler as Hiccup’s father and leader of the village, Stoik the Vast.

Blanchett will join Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn in the upcoming sequel which will again be written and directed by the animated trilogy’s Dean DeBlois. The franchise is based on the series of novels by Cressida Cowell.

The film will be produced by Dreamworks, Universal and Marc Platt Productions for a June 11th, 2027 release date.

On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.

With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding.

As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.

How to Train Your Dragon stars Mason Thomas, Gerard Butler, Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Browyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz and Murray McArthur.
