Pennywise to return in IT: Welcome to Derry season 2

January 22, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

There was only one real winner when it came to TV shows about children battling evil beings things from other dimensions this past year, so it should come as no surprise that a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry is in development.

While HBO are yet to confirm the news, a story in The Hollywood Reporter on director Andy Muschietti revealed that the success of the first season meant that a sophomore season was now in the works.

The further adventures of Pennywise the Clown were hinted at in the superb season finale, which finished with a title card that read “Welcome to Derry”, before the words “Chapter One” appeared onscreen.

The twist-laden episode, titled Winter Fire, also made a point of hammering home the fact that Pennywise experienced time in a non-liner fashion, laying the foundation for adventures in the past, and directly linking the show to the events we’ve already seen in Muschietti’s two blockbuster movies.

Set 27 years before The Losers Club was established, Welcome to Derry takes place in 1962 and dives into the history of the titular town and the lore of Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise the Clown, focusing on some of the many interludes in Stephen King’s 1,138 page horror classic.
