Laurence Fishburne joins Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist

February 5, 2026 by Ricky Church

Mike Flanagan’s upcoming reboot of The Exorcist has gained yet another big name to its cast. Per Variety, The Matrix and John Wick alum Laurence Fishburne will join Scarlet Johansson in the next installment of the beloved and classic franchise.

Flanagan’s Exorcist will not continue from The Exorcist: Believer, but instead be an original story that will serve as a reboot to the franchise. Flanagan has written the script himself and will direct.

Fishburne joins a cast that includes Johansson,  Jacobi Jupe, Diane Lane and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Character details are being kept under wraps for the time being, but the film will begin production in New York City.

The Exorcist was first released in 1973 and focused on two priests who are called to the home of a young girl and tasked with exorcising an evil demon from her body, beginning a night of wicked horrors for them and the family. The film became an instant and groundbreaking classic, often called one of the scariest movies ever made. Fishburne has stated how the original scared him when he was a child, yet also made him want to begin a career in acting.

Flanagan is no stranger to the horror genre, but he has previously expressed his desire to make The Exorcist the “the scariest movie I’ve ever made” with a “radical new take” on the franchise.

The Exorcist will be released on March 12th, 2027.
