10 Cloverfield Lane earns an impressive $25 million on its opening weekend

March 14, 2016 by admin

It looks like the name change and attachment to Cloverfield has paid off for 10 Cloverfield Lane as a smattering of praising reviews and good press has earned the movie a monster opening.

Coming in second to Disney’s Zootopia, 10 Cloverfield Lane was the biggest new release this week and earned $25 million from just under 3,400 screens. With a reported budget of $15 million, this is a fantastic result for the small movie. It also earned another $1.5 million from international territories (mostly Australia) bringing its cumulative total to $26.5 million. Not bad.

10 Cloverfield Lane was originally titled Valencia, which was a rename from its script title The Bunker. However somewere along the way, Cloverfield producer J.J. Abrams decided to morph Valencia into a quasi-sequel to his 2008 found footage monster movie, which earned the movie a lot more press than it probably would have had under its original branding.
