Legally Blonde returning to theaters for 25th anniversary with preview of Elle prequel series

April 8, 2026 by Ricky Church

Before Elle Woods returns in the prequel series Elle, Amazon MGM Studios will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Legally Blonde by re-releasing it on the big screen with a special look at the upcoming prequel.

Released in 2001, the films features Reese Witherspoon as the highly fashionable and underestimated Elle Woods who enrolls in Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, but gets involved in a court case that will prove beyond a doubt she is more than just a typical blonde. Directed by Robert Luketic and based on the novel by Amanda Brown, the film also starred Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, Jennifer Coolidge, Holland Taylor, Ali Larter, Alanna Ubach, Linda Cardellini and Oza Perkins.

Legally Blonde became a huge hit, spawning a sequel in 2003, and remains one of Witherspoon’s most iconic roles. The film will be re-released on May 24th and May 27th with both Witherspoon and Elle‘s Lexi Minetree, who stars as the young Elle Woods in high school, giving an introduction to the film followed by an exclusive special look at the upcoming prequel, which will premiere on Prime Video on July 1st.

“Romance, Comedy, Drama, a keen eye for fashion, and an unmatched ability to deliver zingers in the courtroom, Reese Witherspoon achieved Hollywood superstardom with her portrayal of Elle Woods. 25 years later, Legally Blonde is coming back to theatres for its silver anniversary with a special nationwide theatrical re-release prior to the Elle prequel series hitting Prime Video,” Fathom Entertainment’s Ray Nutt said. “Fans young and old will enjoy revisiting this 2001 classic with an exclusive, heartfelt introduction from the two actresses who are Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon, and Lexi Minetree.”

The classic comedy film follows Elle Woods, a California blonde with couture clothes (mostly pink), fabulous friends, and the hottest boyfriend on campus. So, when Warner Huntington III suddenly dumps her and heads to Harvard Law School, Elle takes matters into her own manicured hands. She enrolls too! Now getting Warner back should be a snap (well, maybe a bend and snap), right? Wrong! Elle’s about to begin the toughest fight of her life…for love, honor, justice, and respect for blondes everywhere!

Legally Blonde will be re-released in theatres on May 24th and 27th.
