Exclusive Interview – Claire Dewar on Scream Descent

April 13, 2026 by Amie Cranswick

There is a certain presence that separates an actress from a leading lady, an ability not just to perform, but to anchor a story, command its emotional core, and draw an audience into every moment.

In Scream Descent, set to release in 2027, Claire Dewar does exactly that, stepping into the psychological intensity of horror with a performance that is both grounded and quietly commanding.

Best known for her strong foundation in both classical training and contemporary performance, Dewar brings a refined sense of control and instinct to the role of Layla Maltman, a character navigating fear, loyalty, and survival in a world where nothing is as it seems.

Inspired by the legacy of the Wes Craven American slashers Scream franchise, Scream Descent leans into suspense and unpredictability, but it is Dewar’s presence that gives the story its emotional weight.

The film follows a group of friends in a quiet town left reeling after the brutal murder of a young girl. As they search for answers, they uncover a web of long-buried secrets that pulls them into a deadly game. With a relentless killer closing in, survival becomes uncertain, and trust becomes a risk. At the center of it all is Layla, a character whose strength lies not in spectacle, but in her resolve.

For Dewar, the connection to Layla was immediate. “What drew me to her is how much of myself I see in her,” she explains. “She’s independent, protective, and deeply loyal to the people she loves.”

That alignment translates into a performance that feels lived-in rather than performed. Dewar avoids overplaying the genre, instead grounding Layla in authenticity, allowing the tension of the story to build naturally around her. It is a choice that reflects both confidence and restraint, hallmarks of an actress who understands the power of subtlety.

Her preparation for the role was equally considered. Immersing herself in the rhythm and tone of the “Scream universe”, Dewar revisited key films from the franchise to study its pacing and structure. She also engaged in conversations with horror enthusiasts to better understand audience expectations, ensuring that Layla would resonate within the genre while still standing apart as a fully realized character.

The production itself added an unusual layer to her process. In an effort to preserve the film’s twists, Dewar was only given the portions of the script involving her character. The result is a performance shaped by instinct and immediacy, one that mirrors Layla’s own limited understanding of the danger unfolding around her.

“I know her journey, but I don’t know how the entire story ends,” Dewar notes. “Watching the finished film will be just as much of a surprise for me as it is for the audience.”

Filmed in Murrieta, California, Scream Descent also marks a meaningful creative collaboration. Dewar joined the project through connections from her time at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, working alongside fellow alumni in a production that balanced ambition with a strong sense of trust.

That sense of confidence extends beyond this project. Born in Brisbane, Australia, Dewar has built her career on a foundation of discipline and intention. From early training in dance and performance to her formal education and stage work in Los Angeles, she has consistently approached her craft with precision and purpose. Whether on stage or on screen, she brings a level of focus that elevates the material around her. In Scream Descent, that focus becomes a defining force.

For Claire Dewar, Scream Descent is not simply a foray into horror, it is a statement. One that positions her as a lead actress capable of carrying a story, commanding attention, and leaving a lasting impression.

In a genre defined by who survives, it is clear that Dewar is one to watch until the very end!
