Live-action Ferngully: The Last Rainforest movie incoming from director Marielle Heller

April 18, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

Audiences are set to return to the forest of Ferngully with the news that Nightbitch director Marielle Heller has been tasked with bringing the cherished 1992 cartoon to the big-screen as a live-action adventure.

According to Deadline Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward on an adaptation of the fantasy flick, which tells the story of Crysta, a fairy who lives in an Australian forest who accidently shrinks a logger named Zak to her size. Together they try and save their rainforest home from the loggers and an evil toxic pollution called Hexxus. Heller, who is also responsible for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Can You Ever Forgive Me? will direct from her own screenplay.

Released in 1992, the Bill Kroyer-directed film featured the voices of Robin Williams, Samantha Mathis, Christian Slater, and Tim Curry, with a soundtrack that included songs by Sheena Easton and Elton John. Despite this line-up of talent Ferngully: The Last Rainforest was a something of a box-office disappointment, grossing just $32.7 million worldwide. However, the home-rental market, the increasingly prescient ecological message, and comparisons to Avatar have helped maintain the film’s legacy.
