Danny Boyle hopes to start shooting third 28 Years Later movie next year

May 31, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

There has been plenty of mixed messages when it comes to the fate of the third installment of the 28 Years Later trilogy, but Danny Boyle has given fans hope by revealing that he hopes to film 28 Years Later III next year.

The Trainspotting director told JoBlo that he had hoped to film all three films consecutively, but that they had simply run out of time due to location issues.

Boyle said “We ran out of time because it’s set in an area of Britain where you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year…we literally ran out of time, so it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year. But there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex (Garland) has done a wonderful script for it.”

Boyle’s 28 Years Later earned rave reviews from the critics and $150 million at the worldwide box-office. However, the audience reaction was a little more muted, especially when it came to that film’s divisive ending, which was the lead in to Nia DaCosta’s sequel, The Bone Temple.

Early reactions to press screenings of that film had prompted Sony Pictures to announce a Cillian Murphy-led trilogy capper would be rushed into production, but then The Bone Temple drastically underperformed when it was released in early 2026, grossing just over a third of the original film’s tally, with just $58 million globally. There has been no official word from Sony Pictures since then.

Next up for Boyle is Ink, his Rupert Murdoch biography starring Jack O’Connell (Sinners), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Claire Foy (H is for Hawk).
