New Commando comics bring more action and adventure

June 24, 2026 by Andrew Newton

A new set of Commando comics is available, bringing the stories of more war heroes to readers. This latest batch of comics (issues 5967-5970) features a brand-new Rayker story and a deadly battle between a Churchill and a Tiger I tank during the North Africa campaign. Also, DC Thompson has announced that fans of the comics can buy issues direct from the DC Thompson shop with free delivery.

This latest set of Commando comics are:

Rayker: Back in The Ranks – issue 5967 (Home of Heroes)

Sergeant Moses Rayker is a black man in the segregated American military, and not only does he have to fight the Germans, but he also has to fight the racist attitudes from his commanders.

After the US suffer extreme losses in a surprise German attack, General John Lee asks for infantry volunteers at the rank of private. It took Rayker 5 long years to earn his sergeant stripes, but to join in on this action, he’ll need to be back in the ranks.

Simon Topping is the man behind this gripping tale, with art by Mike Dorey and cover art by Mike Dorey and Grant Wood.

Dive After Dark – issue 5968 (Gold)

In this story from 1972 (first published as issue 616), the Fleet Air Arm outfit known as “Buckley’s Bats” had ace pilots and highly skilled navigators. However, they flew Fairey Albacores — cumbersome biplanes with a top speed of only 160 mph. Could these aces make a difference to the war while flying kites like those?

This classic story was written by Brunt, with cover art supplied by Ian Kennedy and internal art by Mira.

Desert Duel – 5969 (For Action and Adventure)

In this new adventure by Andrew Knighton, a raid on a German outpost leaves the crew of a Churchill tank nicknamed Lancelot alone and pursued by a deadly Tiger I tank. During a deadly cat-and-mouse struggle to rejoin their unit, the two crew must eventually confront each other in a desert duel.

This issue features artwork by Carlos Pino, and exciting cover art by Keith Burns.

The Sleeping Tiger – 5970 (Silver)

In the second classic story from 1985 (issue 1874), the action follows Jim Slater, a man who enjoyed his sleep. No matter where he was, Jim could soon go off to the land of nod. Even when sent to the jungles of Asia to fight against the Japanese, Jim found it easy to doze, but tigers also manage to nab a catnap easily, and Jim turned out to be a sleeping tiger.

Anglo provides the story and internal art for this exciting war tale, with cover art by Philpott.

This latest selection of Commando comics is available now from all good retailers. Don’t forget, they can also be ordered from the DC Thompson online shop.
