Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky is set to reunite with Cartoon Network for a Conan the Barbarian animated series which is in development for Prime Video.
“I’ve been trying to develop Conan since 2008, but the world was not ready,” said Tartakovsky via a video message during Warner Bros.’ presentation at this week’s Annecy International Film Festival. “But now, after Adult Swim’s Samurai Jack and Primal, it’s prime time for this to come to life. I have been so inspired by the books written by Robert E. Howard, whose work I have a personal connection with. So far I feel super excited. This is the only IP I’ve worked on other than Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and I think it’s going to be something special.”
Tartakovsky’s Cartoon Network return follows a fifteen year spell primarily focussed on feature films for Sony Pictures Animation, including the Hotel Transylvania franchise and the Netflix adult animated comedy Fixed.
The new project will mark the third Conan animated series after Conan the Adventurer, which ran for 65 episodes between 1992 and 1993, and it’s short-lived sequel Conan and the Young Warriors from 1994. It also comes in the wake of the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to reprise his role from 1982’s Conan the Barbarian and 1984’s Conan the Destroyer for the long-rumoured King Conan, with Mission: Impossible helmer Christopher McQuarrie on board to direct.
