As the cult comedy celebrates its 25th anniversary, Deadline is reporting that David Spade looks set to reprise the title role from 2001’s Joe Dirt once more, lending his voice to an animated sequel series in development at Fox.
The logline for the series reads: “It’s now 25 years later, and Joe Dirt (Spade) keeps on keepin’ on. He’s still in love with Brandy, his skull still hasn’t un-fused with the mullet, and most of all, he’s still got his eternal optimism. And he needs it – just because he’s married with three teenage daughters doesn’t mean his problems are over. The messes are bigger, and Joe’s mop and bucket just won’t cut it.
A co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment, the series has been written by Scott Gairdner (Moonbeam City), while Spade will executive produce alongside Fred Wolf, his co-writer on the original and its 2015 sequel Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser. The duo also previously worked with Sony TV to develop an animated take for TBS back in 2010, although it ultimately failed to move forward.
