Game of Thrones showrunners call season 6 the “best one” yet

March 21, 2016 by Justin Cook

Game of Thrones has consistently been hailed as one of the best shows on TV during its five years on air, which is part of the reason why the show has amassed such a large following and so many are looking forward to its season 6 premiere next month. Unlike the show’s previous seasons, however, the upcoming season is, for the most part, not based on texts previously published by George R.R. Martin, the author responsible for creating the A Song of Ice and Fire books on which the show is based, and is mainly adapted from his unreleased and long-delayed sixth novel.

But, fans of the show who feared that the quality of the sixth season would suffer for this reason can rest easy knowing that Game of Thrones co-creators and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are calling the sixth season the “best one” yet. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the two were asked about the most exciting aspect of the season after watching near-final cuts of each episode.

Benioff replied, “The whole season. Dan and I talk about this a lot. This is not us trying to hype it. Usually there’s an episode or two we’re kind of nervous about, that didn’t turn out as well as we hoped. This season there is not a weak episode. We had great directors who knew what they were doing, paired with excellent [directors of photography]. We thought at the script stage it might be our strongest season. Then the episodes came in better than we hoped. We’re always reluctant to say it’s ‘the best season yet’ because so much of that is in the eyes of the beholder. And Dan and I are so close to it that it’s impossible to be unbiased. But that’s my sense – watching them all together now, this is the best one we’ve done. It’s also the one I’m proudest of, because it was the hardest.”

Judging from the comments above, it seems that the pair’s hard work on the new season will result in fans being more than satisfied with what it has to offer.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24th.
