Hulu is officially re-opening The X-Files, with the streamer giving a series order to a Ryan Coogler-produced reboot of the classic 90s sci-fi series following a pilot episode written and directed by the Black Panther and Sinners helmer.
The new series will see Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard) and Himesh Patel (The Odyssey) following in the footsteps of David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully as “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler, who will executive produce the new series alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale (See). “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”

Created by Chris Carter, who will also serve as an executive producer on the reboot, The X-Files originally ran on Fox between 1993 and 2002, spawning two feature films before being revived for a further two seasons in 2016 and 2018 respectively. This year saw the release of Carter’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn, a director’s cut of his 2008 film, while Dynamite and Disney have also recently announced that they will explore the further adventures of Mulder and Scully with a new comic book series launching this December.
