Gary Collinson reviews Street Fighter X G.I. Joe #2…
The second day of the tournament pitting Street Fighter vs. G.I. JOE begins! Destro and M. Bison team up to provide Cobra with the ultimate weapon… but Guile, Snake Eyes, Ryu and Storm Shadow have a plan of their own to stop the Shadaloo tyrant. The World Warrior tournament heats up for the Street Fighter team and G.I. JOE alike!

After last month’s action-heavy, story-lite first issue, IDW’s latest crossover Street Fighter X G.I. Joe returns today with an even more action-heavy, story-lite second issue as we witness the second half of the eighth-finals of the World Warrior Tournament.
As with last time, we’re treated to four bouts here, as Guile goes up against Gung-Ho, Dan battles Chun-Li, Storm Shadow takes on Croc Master, and M. Bison enters the fray for a rather brutal scrap with Cammie, with the Shadaloo boss field-testing his new Psycho Drive designed by Destro’s M.A.R.S. Industries. Zartan, the master of disguise, also makes an appearance, but I’ll not spoil that here.
Artist Emilio Laiso and colorist David Garcia Cruz continue to do some fine work on the fights; they’re fun and energetic, and fit very well into the Street Fighter mold. Writer Aubrey Sitterson’s experience with the world of professional wrestling continues to shine through too, with the combatants delivering all their trademark signature moves, as well as spewing out plenty of trash talk along the way.
It may seem unfair to criticise a Street Fighter and G.I. Joe comic for containing too much action; however, it’s not the amount of action that’s the issue as such, but rather the formulaic ‘Fight 1, Fight 2, Fight 3, Fight 4, End’ structure. We’re only two issues in, and already it feels a little repetitive. At this point, this is a Street Fighter comic, guest starring some G.I. Joe characters. I’m still enjoying the series for what it is, but let’s hope the third issue mixes it up a little and gives us more insight into the wider story going on outside of the arena.
