Adam McKay to direct film adaptation of Mark Waid’s Irredeemable

May 6, 2016 by James Garcia

Adam McKay has slowly been working his way toward directing a superhero movie for a couple years now. He rewrote the Ant-Man script with Paul Rudd after Edgar Wright’s departure, and was even in line to direct before passing on the project (which then went to Peyton Reed). He was then rumored to be in the running to helm The Inhumans, but we know that’s not going to happen because the film has been taken off of Marvel’s Phase Three slate.

Now, McKay finally is making his superhero directorial debut, though it’s not for Marvel Studios. Instead, he’s heading to 20th Century Fox to adapt Mark Waid’s 2009 comic Irredeemable.

Irredeembale, from Boom! Studios, ran for 36 issues and told the story of the Plutonian, the world’s greatest superhero who turned evil and began slaughtering the people of Earth. It then fell to a superhero group known as the Paradigm to team up with the Plutonian’s arch-nemesis and take him down.

The news comes from Deadline, which is quick to point out that this will not be tied to any existing superhero cinematic universe, and could in fact be a launching off point for another. The film will be adapted by Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters scribe Tommy Wirkola, and produced by BOOM! Studios’ Ross Ritchie and Stephen Christy, along with Gary Sanchez’ Kevin Messick and Adam McKay.
