Michael Shannon in talks to play antagonist in Guillermo del Toro’s supernatural romance

May 8, 2016 by Justin Cook

Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Cold War-set supernatural romance may be adding Man of Steel and Midnight Special star Michael Shannon to its stellar cast as the main antagonist, The Wrap reports.

The actor is in talks to join Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer and Michael Stuhlbarg in the film, which del Toro will both direct and co-produce alongside his Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak collaborator, Callum Greene.

Shannon will have appeared in a little over 10 2016 films by the end of the year, which is practically unheard of, especially for an actor of his caliber. He has already popped up in Frank & Lola, Midnight Special, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Elvis & Nixon, but audiences will also soon be seeing him in Werner Herzog’s Salt and Fire, Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals and more.

At the time, most details about the project are still rumours, as they haven’t been confirmed by Fox Searchlight, but the supposed title is The Shape of Water.

Collider released an unofficial synopsis of the project, which can be read below…

Set in 1963, [the film] centers around Elisa, a mute janitor working at a lab where an amphibious man is being held captive. When Elisa falls in love with the creature, she devises a plan to help him escape with the assistance of her neighbor. The world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated.
