Penny Dreadful won’t return for a fourth season

June 20, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Following its shocking season three finale last night, Penny Dreadful  creative John Logan and Showtime chief David Nevins have confirmed that it really is ‘The End’ for the Emmy-nominated series, and it won’t be returning for a fourth season.

“I can absolutely confirm it is really over, the end, that’s all she wrote,” said Logan. “The whole idea to have this be the end of the series applies to all of the characters not just for Vanessa Ives and I felt the ending was for Malcolm and Ethan was Ethan got the father that he wanted and Sir Malcolm got the family he needed and together they came to a nice thing of stasis. Some poems are meant to be haikus and some are meant to be sonnets and some are meant to be enormous epics, and this was always meant to be a sonnet. It was something of grace and beauty. I think we’ve been able to achieve that in a really masterful way with the artists that I work with, everyone’s work. I think this is the right ending so for me to revisit that world again would seem inorganic, I think.”

Despite the series coming to an end after just 27 episodes, Nevins believes it will go on to extend its fanbase as it attracts new viewers: “This is a show that’s going to live on and it’s going to live on streaming platforms. It’s going to be on Showtime. You can watch it whenever you want and I think it will continue to be re-watched and also discovered for the first time over the course of the next 10 years.”

Are you disappointed that Penny Dreadful has come to an end, or was it the right time? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
