Netflix places straight-to-series order for Lost in Space

July 1, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Back in November it was announced that Netflix and Legendary TV were in development on a remake of the 60s cult classic Lost in Space, and now comes word that the streaming service has placed a ten-episode straight-to-series order for the reboot, which is being eyed for a 2018 premiere.

Deadline reports that the new series – which has been written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold), with Zack Estrin (The River) serving as showrunner – will take its cues from Irwin Allen’s original, and centres “on the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons.”

“The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience. The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world,” states Cindy Holland, VP Original Content at Netflix.

Premiering in 1965, Lost in Space ran for 83 episodes across three seasons. It was followed by a big screen reboot in 1998, while a pilot was also in development at The WB back in 2003 but failed to get picked up to series.
