Netflix to air new Star Trek series

July 18, 2016 by Ricky Church

With the new Star Trek series set to premiere on CBS’ streaming service CBS All Access in January 2017, there has been a question as to how the series will be broadcast internationally. That question has finally been answered as news came today that Netflix has just gained the rights not just for the new series, but for the entire Star Trek library.

CBS Studios International and Netflix have made a huge deal where the popular streaming service will be the home of Star Trek in 188 countries around the world with each episode of the new series going online within 24 hours of its US broadcast. Viewers worldwide can also catch all 727 episodes of the various series – from Star Trek: The Original Series straight through Star Trek: Enterprise – on Netflix by the end of 2016.

Streaming for the new series will be a bit different in the US and Canada, though. As mentioned, Star Trek will premiere on CBS All Access in the US while in Canada it will be broadcast through Bell Media, first on CTV and then on Bell’s streaming service CraveTV.

Production will begin in September in Toronto for a January 2017 premiere. Not much is know about the series yet, but you can expect to hear more during the San Diego Comic-Con. Recently showrunner Bryan Fuller talked about his idea for the series and why he wanted to be a part of the new show, stating “It’s wonderful. It’s surreal. I didn’t want to be a writer. I wanted to be a Star Trek writer, so to be able to craft a new iteration of the show with new characters and a whole new adventure and whole new way of telling stories that you haven’t been able to tell on Star Trek is honorable and it’s a dream come true. It’s hard to articulate that.”

While we wait for more news on Star Trek, check out our red carpet interviews with the Star Trek Beyond cast and director Justin Lin.
