Hulu orders pilot for Marvel’s Runaways series from Gossip Girl creators

August 17, 2016 by Gary Collinson

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading to Hulu, with the streaming service giving the green light to a pilot episode and additional scripts for a new series based upon Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s Runaways.

The project comes by way of Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and follows a group of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but have to reunite against a common foe – their parents, who are part of an evil crime organisation.

“I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” said Schwartz, with Savage adding that: “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu.”

“We’ve known the Runaways‘ story would make great television,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s head of television. “And being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

A film version of Runaways was first announced back in 2008, with Drew Pearce subsequently attached as writer. However, plans were put on hold when Marvel Studios decided to focus on The Avengers, moving Pearce onto Iron Man 3, and the plug was finally pulled in 2013.
