The Russos say Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America in the MCU, discuss how Civil War sets up Avengers: Infinity War

August 26, 2016 by Amie Cranswick

Well, Steve Rogers may not have died in Captain America: Civil War, but it seems he has given up the mantle of Captain America as we head into Avengers: Infinity War.

“I think him dropping that shield [at the end of Civil War] is him letting go of that identity,” said director Joe Russo in an interview with The Huffington Post. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

In the comic books, Steve Rogers has operated under other identities such as Nomad, while the likes of Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson have taken on the moniker Captain America. Of course, it remains to be seen whether any of this will play out in Avengers: Infinity War, but don’t be surprised to see Steve picking up the shield once more when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes find themselves up against Thanos.

And speaking of the Mad Titan, Joe Russo has revealed how the ending of Captain America: Civil War sets up Infinity War during an interview with IGN:

“Part of what excited us about how we could end Civil War, and the fact that there is this divide between Cap and Tony and their relationship that will be very, very difficult for them to ever repair, the fact that the Avengers are divided in two and half of them are now wanted by the law and the other fact are not too comfortable with their fate moving forward, and the fact that Thanos and the Infinity War are coming — the greatest threat the universe has ever seen is going to come at the moment where the Avengers are arguably at their lowest, at their worst, at their least strong and most divided since they’ve been formed — that for us was a very exciting place for us to be as storytellers because of the vulnerable nature of our heroes in that kind of a situation. For us, as we move forward into Infinity War, the condition of the Avengers is very much an important part of how that story starts and what dangers they face moving forward.”

Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled for release on May 4th, 2018, with Untitled Avengers following on May 3rd, 2019.
