Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito turned down Marvel TV role as he’s holding out for a movie

August 29, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito has revealed that previously he’s been offered a role in one of Marvel’s various television projects, but turned it down as he’s holding out to appear in the big screen side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I know the Marvel world exists on the Disney lot,” Esposito told Comic Book. “I love those guys at Marvel. We’ve been trying to figure out how to collaborate on something. I’m hoping that it is something. They came to me with something for their television department, then I realized if I did that, I’d never be able to have that same character be in that film department. Once you’re in a Marvel character in the television version, you have to stay in the particular character. They can’t carry that over to film.”

Several actors from the movies have appeared on the small screen, including Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), Powers Boothe (Gideon Malick) and Henry Goodman (Dr. List), but as yet none have gone the other way.

Esposito’s comments would seem to suggest there’s some kind of internal policy within Marvel “preventing” TV characters from featuring in the movies, which is certainly bad news for anyone hoping to see The Defenders as part of Avengers: Infinity War, or any Marvel movie for that matter.
