Following his upcoming World War II film Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson is set to turn his attention to the Australian military, with Variety reporting that he’s snapped up the rights to Mark Donaldson’s bestselling autobiography The Crossroad.
Donaldson was a rebellious teenager who decided to enlist in the Australian Army following the death of his father and the disappearance of his mother, who was presumed murdered. Here he worked his way towards his goal of joining Australia’s Special Air Service and his heroics in Afghanistan saw him becoming the first Australian since 1969 to be awarded the Victoria Cross. The book is described as “the journey of a flawed man who turned away from self-destruction to fight his own war and save the life of a man he barely knew.”
After spending several years in The Wilderness following his battle with alcoholism and anti-Semetic comments, Gibson in the middle of a comeback attempt; last month saw the release of the action thriller Blood Father, while he’s set to star alongside Sean Penn and Natalie Dormer in The Professor and the Madman, and is also busy developing his Passion of the Christ sequel The Resurrection.
