Disney and Lucasfilm “have a lot of movies to make” before a Star Wars TV show

September 14, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Last month, it was revealed that the Disney-owned network ABC is in discussions with Lucasfilm about exploring the galaxy far, far away with a live-action Star Wars TV series.

Of course, this is something that fans have long expected; prior to the sale of Lucasfilm, George Lucas spent several years developing Star Wars: Underworld, reportedly commissioning 100 scripts, while the last few years have brought countless rumours surrounding a small screen Star Wars, usually suggesting that Netflix would be its destination.

While last month’s news did confirm that Disney has ambitions to bring the franchise to TV, Disney-ABC Television President Ben Sherwood has now played down the report, telling fans not to get their hopes up, and if we do get a TV series, it isn’t going to be any time soon.

“Star Wars plans rest in the hands of [Walt Disney Studios chairman] Alan Horn and [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy,” Sherwood told THR. “Somewhere we hope in a galaxy not too far away there will be a television show that will air on one of our networks. But I wouldn’t get anybody’s hopes up too high. They have a lot of movies to make between now and then.”

So, by the sounds of it, the focus at the moment remains firmly on the movie side of the franchise, which has Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dropping this December, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2017, the young Han Solo movie in 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019, and an as-yet-unrevealed Anthology movie in 2020.

Still, we do have season three of Star Wars Rebels getting underway this month, on September 24th.
