Marvel replacing Ultimate Spider-Man with new animated Spidey series

October 9, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Marvel Animation has announced that it is set to replace Ultimate Spider-Man with a new animated Spidey series which promised to take the wall-crawler back to his roots, exploring his early years as a teen crime-fighter.

“Spider-Man is the biggest action hero in the world. He is an iconic character whose duality makes him both relatable and aspirational for the Disney XD audience,” Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, programming and general manager for Disney XD tells USA Today. “[It will deliver] a fresh take on a beloved classic that will engage both new and existing Spidey fans with its compelling drama, exciting action and the signature sense of comedy.”

Titled simply Spider-Man, the new series has been developed by Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and Philip Pignotto (Avengers Assemble) and “focuses on insecure yet courageous teenager Peter Parker as he learns that with great power comes great responsibility — especially when you get the strange abilities of a spider.”

Ultimate Spider-Man is set to finish its four-season run in January with a two-part finale entitled ‘Graduation Day’. The new Spider-Man series will then get underway later in the year, although a premiere date is yet to be revealed.
