UPDATE: Josh Boone talks X-Men: The New Mutants, has plans for a trilogy of films

December 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Back in May of last year, The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone signed on to develop a New Mutants movie for 20th Century Fox. With the X-Men spinoff now gearing up for a spring shoot, the filmmaker has been chatting to Creative Screenwriting about his plans for the project, seemingly confirming the rumours about Demon Bear as the villain, as well as revealing plans for a trilogy of films.

“[Co-writer Knate Gwaltney and I] had loved this X-Men spinoff, The New Mutants. We had loved Bill Sienkiewicz’s run with Chris Claremont that had Demon Bear. It was really dark, interesting, and different from the typical X-Men stories that we had read. After I made The Fault in Our Stars, we made Fox a comic book. It walked them through a trilogy of New Mutant films that would build on each other. We used this program called Comic Life, and took all the images we had loved from the series and strung them together to show them the movie we wanted to do. We brought it to Simon Kinberg and he really liked it. We’ve been going for the past year and a half to get it ready, and I’m about to go location scout and we have a release date now.”

UPDATE: It is also being reported that the film is now going by the official title of X-Men: The New Mutants.

Fox is so far keeping the release date for New Mutants to itself, and we’ve also had no official word on casting, although various rumours have linked Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) to the project, as well as current X-Men stars Alexandra Shipp (Storm) and James McAvoy (Professor X).
