Yesterday, we heard that Iron Man 3 director Shane Black will be helming a Predator film for 20th Century Fox. He’ll be writing a treatment for the film before handing the script over to Monster Squad scribe Fred Dekker. When it was announced, THR specifically cited the project as a reboot, but according to Black, that’s not exactly the case.
In a new interview with Collider, Black explains his and Dekker’s approach to the 1987 original, and their desire to stray away from simply hitting the reset button: “As far as Fred [Dekker] and I are concerned, why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine? ”
Black explains that he doesn’t personally care for reboots, but can “really get behind inventive sequels” and notes that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology rather than hitting the restart button.”
So, it sounds like the two really want to keep the original film intact, and simply find new ways to bring the mythology to life. There certainly is more of this story to explore, and as long as they don’t go too far down the rabbit hole (a la Alien vs. Predator) it sounds like this film is in good hands.
