Disney meeting to discuss how to handle Princess Leia in Star Wars: Episode IX

January 5, 2017 by Gary Collinson

As Star Wars fans continue to mourn the loss of the beloved actress Carrie Fisher, it seems that Disney is starting to give some thought as to how to handle her character Princess Leia in the remaining chapters of the Sequel Trilogy.

According to THR, two major sequences were planned for Leia in Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX – a reunion with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, and a confrontation with her son, Ben Solo / Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

As previously reported, Fisher has completed her work on Episode VIII during principal photography last year, and it’s said that the Rian Johnson film will see her role expanded from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, word is that Leia would then have had an even bigger role in Episode IX, which is to be directed by Colin Trevorrow.

THR’s report suggests that Trevorrow will be meeting with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy next week in order to discuss how to handle Fisher’s passing; options on the table include overhauling the script for Episode IX to remove Leia (which would necessitate reshoots on Episode VIII), or rewriting the script to reduce her role and using CGI to recreate Fisher’s likeness, similar to what ILM did with Peter Cushing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
