Thanos wants to “re-balance the universe” in Avengers: Infinity War

February 15, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Having first planted the seed back in 2012 with the post-credits scene of The Avengers, production on the hotly-anticipated superhero epic Avengers: Infinity War is now in full swing, and Marvel’s plan to have Earth’s Mightiest Heroes going up against the Mad Titan is just a little over a year away from release.

Despite being teased heavily throughout Phase Two – and featuring in Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron – we know very little about the MCU version of Thanos at this point, or what his plans are – save for collecting the various Infinity Stones, presumably for some rather evil deed (unless he just wants to construct himself the most comfortable chair in the universe).

Well, speaking on the bonus features of the home entertainment release of Doctor Strange (via Screen Rant), screenwriter Stephen McFeely has offered a brief insight into Thanos’ motivation, stating that: “His goal is to re-balance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.”

There has been a lot of speculation that Infinity War will stick closely to The Infinity Gauntlet comic book story, which saw Thanos trying to win the affections of Mistress Death by using the Infinity Gems to wipe out half of the life in the universe. It’s interesting to note that McFeely makes no mention of Death being involved in the plot, and so it’s entirely possible that a) Marvel has opted to go down a different route for the MCU, or b) McFeely simply wants to keep her inclusion a surprise.

It has been rumoured on a number of occasions that Death will feature in the movie, with one report even suggesting that Cate Blanchett’s Hela from Thor: Ragnarok will substitute for the character. But of course there’s also a good chance those reports were just guesswork.
