David Thewlis reportedly playing Wonder Woman’s main villain

February 19, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Warning. Spoilers for Wonder Woman follow…

We’ve seen a lot of marketing material for Gal Gadot’s upcoming solo DC movie Wonder Woman over the past few months, but so far Warner Bros. has done a pretty good job of keeping the film’s main antagonist under wraps.

That being said, a report in January suggested that the Amazon Princess will find herself battling Ares, the God of War – something that was supported by a first look at the action figure tie-in line, which includes an Ares Build-A-Figure.

Well, Batman-News is reporting that Ares is indeed the main villain, and that he’ll be portrayed by Harry Potter star David Thewlis, through a mixture of practical effects and CGI (which the site speculates may be the reason he’s been absent from the film’s trailers).

Thewlis’ casting was first announced by Warner Bros. back in November of 2015, but like many of the stars in the movie, his role has been kept under wraps.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman will hit cinemas on June 2nd, 2017 with a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead).
