Benedict Cumberbatch plays down Doctor Strange stand-in rumours for Avengers: Infinity War

March 3, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Back in January it was reported that Benedict Cumberbatch was facing scheduling conflicts with Avengers: Infinity War, and that Marvel had hired a body double to perform on set as the Sorcerer Supreme, with the studio then planning to shoot Cumberbatch’s close-ups at a later date and digitally insert him into the original footage.

Well, speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the Sherlock star has played down that rumour, stating: “I think it’s a bit of an exaggeration. There’s a great deal that can be done in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and any comic universe. Whether it’s hiding a pregnancy, to having someone there who’s on another side of the world, but there’s only so much they can do without you. So, I’ll be there. Don’t worry.”

The original report claimed that Cumberbatch was busy filming The Current War, which was preventing him from being on set for Avengers: Infinity War. However, that film has now wrapped, and with Infinity War’s shoot expected to last up to a year, there’s still plenty of time for the Sorcerer Supreme to link up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on set. Still, judging from Cumberbatch’s comments, it would appear that there may have been some element of truth to the rumour, for some scenes at least.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently in production ahead of a release on May 2nd 2018, followed by the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4 on May 3rd 2019.
