Gina Torres closes deal for Suits spinoff

March 4, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Last week it was reported that Universal Cable Productions is in very early development on a Suits spinoff centred around Gina Torres’ Jessica Pearson, and now after making her return to the show in this week’s season six finale, we have official confirmation that Torres has closed a deal to lead the potential new show.

“I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity and the level of confidence Bonnie Hammer, Jeff Wachtel and everyone at UCP have in me and the potential of this project,” Torres tells Deadline. “Can’t wait to get started.”

“Gina had the idea and went to the studio. She pitched an idea of what happens if we follow Jessica into the future a little bit,” added Suits creator/showrunner Aaron Korsh. “She has a specific take on it that we’re still mulling over right now. They were excited about it, I was excited about it, and we decided to move forward with thinking about what it is.”

Details on the potential spinoff are still being worked out, and as yet it’s unclear whether it will tie in with the story of the upcoming seventh season of Suits or stand on its own, although Korsh did suggest that Jessica will likely remain in Chicago for her own series. He also didn’t rule out the possibility of Torres appearing in the seventh season of Suits, adding that: “We don’t have specific plans but she’s obviously always a near and dear character of the show and if opportunities arise, we would of course love to bring her back.”
